About Midwifery Care

Why choose a midwife?

The term midwife means “with woman,” and it represents a group of healthcare professionals who are educated and trained as advance practice nurses in the care of women. Midwives have proven to be the ideal healthcare providers for women with low risk, uncomplicated pregnancies.

To become a certified nurse midwife, a licensure as a Registered Nurse is a preliminary requirement.  In addition to a Masters in Science of Nursing, a successful completion of the national board examination is necessary to be authorized to practice under the title of Certified Nurse Midwife (American Midwifery Certification Board [AMCB], 2018).  As such, midwives are registered nurses with graduate level education who practice at an advanced level of nursing.  Midwives are women's health clinicians who are highly trained to care for pregnancy, childbirth, lactation and newborns.

Philosophically, midwives view pregnancy as a natural human phenomenon and aim to empower women through the journey of pregnancy and childbirth.  Midwives tend to trust on the natural abilities of women's bodies to have a natural childbirth without the need for medical interventions.

Historically, midwives have prioritized the health and well-being of all women across race and socioeconomic status, even before the inception of the profession of obstetricians.  Midwives have demonstrated superior skills in the care of low-risk pregnancy by achieving better maternal health outcomes then their physician counterparts.
